University of Belgrade - Faculty of Law

Degree Programs

In addition to undergraduate studies, the Faculty of Law offers master and doctoral programmes, as well as a variety of formal programs of specialized studies, and training courses and preparatory lectures. Up until now, the undergraduate studies lasted four years and were organised in five streams with the emphases on judicial matters, administrative law, business law, international law and legal theory.

The two-year post-graduate master and three-year doctoral studies were organised through fifteen programs*, and led to acquiring the academic title of a master or, respectively, doctor of Legal Science; Legal and Economic Sciences; Legal and Political Sciences; and Legal and Social Sciences. The Faculty also organizes an array of specialist courses in a number of fields, the number of which is growing every year. **

In the 2005/2006 school year, the Faculty undertook a reform of its teaching methods and curriculum in accordance with the Bologna declaration, with the aim of integrating itself into the European Higher Education Area. The new generation of students has commenced studies in accordance with the new system in which every course lasts one semester only. The new curriculum has been adopted and it is going to be implemented starting with the 2006/07 school year. *** A two-cycle system of studies is being introduced – the first lasts four years (undergraduate studies) and the second lasts one year (master studies). The undergraduate studies include mandatory courses, a selection of three major streams of study – judicial-administrative, business law and legal theory, as well as a number of elective courses which students can choose according to their personal interests and preferences. The master studies encompass two basic programmes – business law programme and administrative-judicial programme, as well as a large number of so-called open master programmes in various areas. For the master's degree mandatory practical training in courts, state administration or private companies has been introduced, in addition to a 30-50 pages paper requirement. The Faculty has also introduced the ECTS system, new standards for the mandatory literature, rules for evaluating students' pre-exam obligations, the diploma supplement, and other measures aimed at conforming to the European standards in higher education, their strict implementation in the system of teaching and evaluation, as well as quality assurance and control.

In order to meet the challenge of serving a great number of students and maintaining high academic standards at the same time, a wide area of teaching methods is being used, ranging from lectures, seminars, study and expert groups (for advanced students), to mentor work and various other modern methods of teaching. Also, for the purpose of gaining practical skills, the Faculty organizes training courses (e.g. training in using the electronic database containing laws and regulations “Paragraf Net”), a course in legal writing, internships, the legal clinic, trial simulations, moot courts, etc.

The Faculty has put in extra effort to facilitate the learning process of students with special needs, including special programs for electronic access to textbooks and other facilities.
